Origin of the Center Brunswick Methodist Church

Building-Original.jpg

The original Methodist Church as organized in December 1835. It was located on the site where Alvin or Sonmy Ginsburg’s home is at present (written approximately 1950 - 1960). The members came from Eagle Mills, Sycaway, and East Brunswick. There were over 300 Members at that time. Later on, the East Brunswick Methodist Church, Eagle Mills Methodist Church and Sycaway Methodist Church each started their own individual Church.

It was decided to tear down the old church and move it down to the four corners in Center Brunswick, this was done in 1901 and rebuilt but they changed the architecture. The new church was then dedicated in 1902 Reverand William Flouton was the Pastor at the time.

The present (at the time of this letter) Parsonage was built in 1873 when Mr. Van Dun Broeck was here. In 1946 the church was raised and a cellar and basement was excavated. It was a long slow process as it was solid rock. We now have a beautiful large room that is used for church school, classes, supplies and entertainment.

In 1954 When Mr. Snyder was here, we changed the inside of our auditorium by turning the pulpit and choir loft to the side of the church. The original front is now the minister’s study. The old auditorium had chair seats the were fastened to the floor and went up and down. Different members of the church each bought a pew to put in the newly decorated church. Other members of the church had relatives and friends who gave “things” in memory of their (unreadable)

There are only four members of our church who remember and went to the first church that was up the road.

They are Alice Littlefield, Carrie Castle Wade, Helen Smith and my grandfather, Harold Wilson. Helen Smith played the organ, my grandmother Calhoun is the oldest member of this church, she is almost 87.

This photo and letter was given to me by my Aunt Velma Wilson, that was related to the person who wrote the letter.  The letter was written my Mabel Wilson and she resided in the house just west of the Church on Hoosick Road.  She was my aunt’s mother-in-law.   I knew Mabel Wilson and her husband, Harold Wilson  since I was a young girl and remember them living in the house on Hoosick Road. They had 3 sons, Raymond, Ronald and Merritt.   I don’t know when she wrote the letter, but probably in the 1950’s or 1960’s.  The original Church (the picture) was just east of our Church.  There is a house just before you get to the Harley Motorcycle Shop and that is where the original Church was located.  The Wilson and Calhoun families were very active in our Church during my growing up years.  Mabel Wilson was a Calhoun before she married Harold Wilson.
